How to knot a tie

"Half Windsor"

The classic knot

Attributed to the Duke of Windsor, the Half Windsor is a medium triangular, symmetrical knot.

It is easier to do and smaller than the Full Windsor knot – hence the name Half Windsor.
Because it is a smaller knot it is good for thick or wide ties and for standard shirt collars and cutaway collars.

Cross the broad end of the tie over the front of the narrow end, moving from left to right.

Pass the broad end under the narrow end and up through the loop around your neck.

Pass the broad end under the narrow end and up through the loop around your neck.

Cross the broad end to the right, wrapping it around the knot.

Then thread the broad end up through the loop around your neck again.

Take the broad end and thread it down the loop that has been formed.

Push the broad end through the loop.

Tighten and adjust the knot, folding two small pleats in the tie.

Finally, tuck the narrow end through the tab (passantino) on the back of the tie.

QUALITY & CARE

VAN GRAAF - is your specialist for ties.

We offer a large range of top-quality ties, most of which are made of Italian silk. If you are out of practise, we recommend the uncomplicated "Four-in-hand" knot. It is easy to tie, yet still looks very elegant. If a tie is knotted properly, the longer point at the front should end at the beginning of the belt buckle.

CARE

When you take the tie off, you should carefully untie the knot, smooth out the tie and give the sensitive fabric a chance to recover. Always store your ties on a hanger or loosely rolled up - if possible, place them in a moist room, e.g. a bathroom overnight.
